1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 We scrambled from rock to rock, until in a few moments we had madeour way to a point from which we could see the front door of theinn. Wilder's bicycle was leaning against the wall beside it. No onewas moving about the house, nor could we catch a glimpse of anyfaces at the windows. Slowly the twilight crept down as the sun sankbehind the high towers of Holdernesse Hall. Then, in the gloom, we sawthe two side-lamps of a trap light up in the stable-yard of the inn,and shortly afterwards heard the rattle of hoofs, as it wheeled outinto the road and tore off at a furious pace in the direction ofChesterfield.

4. "One tallow stain, or even two, might come by chance; but whenI see no less than five, I think that there can be little doubtthat the individual must be brought into frequent contact withburning tallow--walks upstairs at night probably with his hat inone hand and a guttering candle in the other. Anyhow, he nevergot tallow-stains from a gas-jet. Are you satisfied?"
5. "That is easily got."

1. "You have acted with great discretion. Who sent for you?""The housemaid, Saunders."
2. "This was excellent news, Watson, for it showed me that I was on theright road. I looked up at the sun. It was low in the heavens, and Icalculated that in less than an hour it would lie just above thetopmost branches of the old oak. One condition mentioned in the Ritualwould then be fulfilled. And the shadow of the elm must mean thefarther end of the shadow, otherwise the trunk would have beenchosen as the guide. I had, then, to find where the far end of theshadow would fall when the sun was just clear of the oak.""That must have been difficult, Holmes, when the elm was no longerthere."
3. "What for?"
4. "You must leave it as it is. I shall drop round early to-morrowmorning and chat the matter over. It is possible that I may be in aposition then to indicate some course of action. Meanwhile, you changenothing- nothing at all."

6. Monday, morning found us on our way to the famous university town-an easy effort on the part of Holmes, who had no roots to pull up, butone which involved frantic planning and hurrying on my part, as mypractice was by this time not inconsiderable. Holmes made noallusion to the case until after we had deposited our suitcases at theancient hostel of which he had spoken.

1. "Very possibly! very possibly!" cried Mr. Pinner with a ghastlysmile. "Yes, I have no doubt that we shall be able to do something foryou. What is your particular line, Mr. Harris?"
2. "A proposition which I took the liberty of doubting."
3. "What do you want me to do?"
4. "Yes, sir, I have already read the account in the evening papers.Mr. Horace Harker is a customer of ours. We supplied him with the bustsome months ago. We ordered three busts of that sort from Gelder &Co., of Stepney. They are all sold now. To whom? Oh, I daresay byconsulting our sales book we could very easily tell you. Yes, wehave the entries here. One to Mr. Harker you see, and one to Mr.Josiah Brown, of Labumum Lodge, Labumum Vale, Chiswick, and one to Mr.Sandeford, of Lower Grove Road, Reading. No, I have never seen thisface which you show me in the photograph. You would hardly forgetit, would you, sir, for I've seldom seen an uglier. Have we anyItalians on the staff? Yes, sir, we have several among ourworkpeople and cleaners. I daresay they might get a peep at that salesbook if they wanted to. There is no particular reason for keeping awatch upon that book. Well, well, it's a very strange business, andI hope that you will let me know if anything comes of your inquiries."Holmes had taken several notes during Mr. Harding's evidence, andI could see that he was thoroughly satisfied by the turn which affairswere taking. He made no remark, however, save that, unless we hurried,we should be late for our appointment with Lestrade. Sure enough, whenwe reached Baker Street the detective was already there, and wefound him pacing up and down in a fever of impatience. His look ofimportance showed that his day's work had not been in vain."Well?" he asked. "What luck, Mr. Holmes?"
5. "It was a letter of mine, Mr. Holmes, an indiscreet letter writtenbefore my marriage- a foolish letter, a letter of an impulsive, lovinggirl. I meant no harm, and yet he would have thought it criminal.Had he read that letter his confidence would have been foreverdestroyed. It is years since I wrote it. I had thought that thewhole matter was forgotten. Then at last I heard from this man, Lucas, that it had passed into his hands, and that he would lay it beforemy husband. I implored his mercy. He said that he would return myletter if I would bring him a certain document which he described inmy husband's despatch-box. He had some spy in the office who hadtold him of its existence. He assured me that no harm could come to myhusband. Put yourself in my position, Mr. Holmes! What was I to do?""Take your husband into your confidence."
6. "How did it run? 'Our own colours, green and white.' Sounds likeracing. 'Green open, white shut.' that is clearly a signal. 'Mainstair, first corridor, seventh right, green baize.' This is anassignation. We may find a jealous husband at the bottom of it all. Itwas clearly a dangerous quest. She would not have said 'Godspeed'had it not been so. 'D'- that should be a guide."

1. "I have spent the whole day," said he, "over Lloyd's registersand files of the old papers, following the future career of everyvessel which touched at Pondicherry in January and February in'83. There were thirty-six ships of fair tonnage which werereported there during those months. Of these, one, the Lone Star, instantly attracted my attention, since, although it was reportedas having cleared from London, the name is that which is given toone of the states of the Union."
2. "Only this: that I know that that was not there when I examinedthe hall yesterday. And now, Watson, let us have a little stroll roundin the sunshine."
3. During our return journey, I could see by Holmes's face that hewas much puzzled by something which he had observed. Every now andthen, by an effort, he would throw off the impression, and talk asif the matter were clear, but then his doubts would settle down uponhim again, and his knitted brows and abstracted eyes would show thathis thoughts had gone back once more to the great diningroom of theAbbey Grange, in which this midnight tragedy had been enacted. Atlast, by a sudden impulse, just as our train was crawling out of asuburban station, he sprang on to the platform and pulled me out afterhim.

I know that I went back to drink, like thebeast that I was. But she would have forgiven me; she would have stuckas close to me as a rope to a block if that woman had never darkenedour door. For Sarah Cushing loved me- that's the root of the business-she loved me until all her love turned to poisonous hate when she knewthat I thought more of my wife's footmark in the mud than I did of herwhole body and soul.
